Dealing with snakebites

Adders on the Island of Hvar: Nature Safety Tips

The Adder (Latin: Vipera berus) is an indigenous species that you may encounter on the island of Hvar, especially in mountainous areas, forests, and meadows. It is characterized by a brown or gray body with dark spots on its back and sides. While its bite rarely leads to a fatal outcome, it is essential to be informed about the steps to take after a bite to reduce potential complications.

Procedure after a snakebite:

  1. Stay calm: Maintaining composure after a snakebite is crucial. Try to control your pulse and reduce anxiety to prevent the rapid spread of venom through the body.
  2. Limit movement: If the bite is on a leg or arm, immobilize it as much as possible.
  3. Do not attempt to extract venom: It is crucial not to try to extract venom from the wound. Actions like using a vacuum or cutting the wound can cause additional problems.
  4. Elevate the bitten body part: Keep the bitten body part above the heart level to slow down the spread of venom.
  5. Call for emergency help: Call emergency services immediately and provide your location accurately. Quick intervention by medical professionals is key to providing appropriate medical assistance.
  6. Do not use ice: Avoid applying ice to the bite site, as it may worsen the situation.

Note for tourists:

Visitors to the island of Hvar are advised to exercise caution when exploring natural beauty. Here are some tips:

  1. Be mindful of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings while exploring mountain trails, forest paths, or meadows.
  2. Wear appropriate footwear: Use sturdy footwear that covers your feet to reduce the risk of snake bites.
  3. Follow marked trails: If you plan to hike, use marked trails to minimize contact with wildlife, including snakes.
  4. Maintain a safe distance: If you spot a snake, stay at a safe distance. Never attempt to touch or catch it.
  5. Call the Emergency Service: You can request emergency medical services for suddenly ill or injured persons by calling the telephone number 194, from 0 to 24 hours, via fixed and mobile telecommunications networks. You can also request emergency medical care through the unique number for emergency services 112. You will be connected to the emergency medical service from that number.

Following these guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty of the island of Hvar while being aware of the potential encounter with local fauna, including the Adder Snake.
