The village of Humac is a wonderful example of rural commoners’ architecture. Nestling in a hollow in an elongated ridge in the middle of Hvar Island, it consists of 140 little houses, made completely of stone apart from the doors and some windows. Although the buildings are extremely humble, they are well constructed and harmonious.

Ivan Dolac, a village on the south side of Hvar Island, is a perfect place for recovering from the stresses of a hectic life. It’s a place where the family can relax and enjoy the sun and the sea. Pitve and Dol are the oldest settlements on Hvar. Pitve is situated at the entrance to a gorge called Vratnik. The oldest part of the village, Gornje or Stare Pitve (Upper or Old Pitve), was protected within the natural defences provided by the canyon, and has survived from Illyrian times.

This little inland settlement, situated 157 metres above sea level, has preserved its authentic Mediterranean buildings. Looking at the village’s old stone walls and roofs, you can imagine what life used to be like there in former times. Farming and cultivating olives are the mainstays of this truly picturesque place.

The village of Svirče nestles in a small corner beneath Hvar’s highest point, the St. Nicholas Peak (626 m) and alongside the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain. Its architecture is typical of the island: the stone houses, little stone pathways and picturesque courtyards are redolent of past times and will take you on a journey of distant visions.

The little town of Vrboska, founded in the 15th century, is a treasure-trove of architectural delights and a little realm of quaint bridges tucked alongside a narrow, winding fiord.

This village is especially attractive because of its hilltop position and the old stone houses which cascade around it. The central, most beautiful part of the village is the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, the village’s patron saint. 

Zastražišće, in the eastern part of Hvar (between Jelsa and Sućuraj) is a straggling village which consists of several settlements. Its name, which means ‘watching point’, reflects the fact that it was founded in a strategic location for watching over a wide area of land and sea.

The little tourist village of Zavala is an ideal place for a family holiday. The family-run guest-houses specializing in Mediterranean cuisine are a long-standing  tradition. The local vineyards bask in the ideal climate for producing wines of the highest quality.
