Storytelling -The ‘Following the Cross’ Procession
TThe ‘Following the Cross’ Procession is one of the oldest and most important religious events on Hvar. Held every year on Maundy Thursday, this deeply moving night-time procession is a journey round six central settlements on Hvar Island: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska. It lasts the whole night, with each Cross-Bearer leading his group of pilgrims. This traditional procession, which has been taking place for over 500 years, is inscribed in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Our guide will take you through a detailed vision of the history and significance of the ‘Following the Cross’ Procession, explaining the symbolism and tradition which make this event so special.
