“GOODBYE SUMMER -WELCOME YOUNG OLIVE OIL“

There will be a ceremonial farewell to the summer season in the Municipality of Jelsa on Hvar Island, featuring the presentation of this year’s young olive oils. The venue is the Seca Eva Marija tasting premises in Gdinj, date: Saturday 14th October 2023, time: 3pm to 8pm.

After a highly successful summer season and the end of the grape harvest, in mid-October the olive harvest begins and the oil mills swing into action. Inspired by an idea put forward by Marija Vukelić, the Jelsa Tourist Board and the Seca Eva Marija tasting centre have joined forces to highlight this important part of Hvar’s historic agricultural tradition.

The arrival of newly pressed olive oils will be celebrated with tastings of oils from the Božić, Radojković and Seca Eva Marija oil mills. The tasting centre is in Gdinj, situated in a highly picturesque, authentic part of Hvar Island, where the slogan “Dalmatia as it once was” still rings true. The young oils will be compared to last year’s production, giving visitors the chance to experience the variations in aroma from the different annual crops, guided by olive oil experts. To make this a celebration for all the senses, there will be Mediterranean-style snacks prepared by the well-known food bloggers Sandra Rončević (“O slanom i slatkom”) and Tanja Pastuović Klaić (“Cookam i guštam”) together with Krsto Barbić, one of Hvar’s best chefs from the famed ‘Davor’ restaurant in Zavala. The foods on offer will be enhanced by the wealth of Mediterranean herbal plants from the Fjori Fora aromatic garden, and washed down by the best of Hvar’s wines, the divine nectar produced from Hvar’s indigenous grape varieties (bogdanuša, prč, pošip, plavac mali). Music by the duo “Flora & Piano” and the fine views of Hvar’s olive groves will complete the idyll.

The event is open to the public, but places are limited. In the case of rain, it will not be postponed, but will take place inside the tasting premises instead of on the terrace.
