HVAR, THE ISLAND OF WINE

BOGDANUŠA – A Hvar Island Autochthonous Grape Variety

Translated, the name of this white grape variety means ‘God’s gift’. It is truly special, a rare treat.

Bogdanuša is a grape variety only cultivated on Hvar, so it is without a shadow of doubt an autochthonous product from the sunniest island on the Adriatic. The grape colour varies from greenish-yellow to golden-yellow, and the wine produced from it, which is also called Bogdanuša, has an alcohol content of 12 – 13% and acidity between 5.5 and 6.5 g/l. The vines regularly produce large quantities of grapes in rich bundles.

The Bogdanuša variety does extremely well in the Hvar terroir. The grapes preserve their acidity, giving the wine a pleasant freshness as a result, and they have excellent resistance to dry conditions, by contrast with varieties such as Pošip which do not survive so well in critical conditions.

All in all, Hvar’s Bogdanuša is strongly recommended as a high-quality white wine of choice, especially for summer drinking.

A selection of Hvar’s highly prized wines to add to your summer enjoyment. Several Hvar wines can be shipped abroad, so that you can enjoy them long after your holiday asareminder of Hvar’s many delights!

'Hvarski vinari' is the name of the Hvar Wine Producers' Association. It was founded in Jelsa in 2010. Hvar Island has a long and proud tradition of wine production, which dates back to before the arrival of the Ancient Greek incomers, who were planting their own vines on the island from 384 BCE. Then as now, Hvar wines were highly prized, and were exported all round the Mediterranean, delighting countless people across the centuries. You too can enjoy the high quality of our Hvar wines, which embody the island's special characteristics. Below is a list of the select, dedicated wine producers who are members of our group, 'Hvar otok vina'  ('Hvar, the Wine Island').
